The book has the title 'HMS INTREPID - Her Final Journey'

There are 100 glossy pages of images taken inside and outside of the ship. The images chronicle the ships last days as she underwent recycling in Canada Dock, Liverpool. There are also stories, written by the men that served on her over her 33years in service. the short stories tell of what life was like in the Royal Navy.

George,  This book was well worth the wait!  It is such a shame to see the old girl being torn apart in your excellent photo's and like the rest of ex crew members I just have fond memories of what was in the most part a "Happy Ship" When I joined her straight from Mercury as a JRO(G) she was half way through her first commission and we stayed on and completed the second commission on her, she was still then a relatively new member of the fleet. Sometimes when I think back it seems only like yesterday and other times it seems a life-time away.  Thanks for The Memories, Kind Regards, Alan Thornton

Hi George
I just wanted to say a big thank you to you and your wife for including me in the book. I think you have done a fantastic job and can be proud of your achievements.
For myself I think its a piece of history that I can pass onto my children and they then pass it on to theirs. It makes me feel proud to know that I'm in a book and part of the history of the ship and to be honest puts a great big happy smile on my face.
You've done a great deal for our ship and our shipmates, your one of a kind shippers.
Well done and thank you and here's to meeting at the next reunion or before.
Wolfy

George,

Again well done George it has been an incredible journey. I can not believe that it has been over a year since we all started to come together.
I am sure that the project will go from strength to strength.
Good to see that you are getting some mileage out of the T shirt

Well done Geordie boy! I tried to register with the Chronicle to support the cry for a "MOVIE" to follow the "BOOK". What a great idea "The birth, life and demise of a famous heroic Warship and her many crews". Sounds good to me!

Darby Allen

  George,
I've got a couple of extra copies of the chronicle with the Intrepid book story for you, and also ... at great expense .. (pulled in a couple of favours) .. I've managed to get one of the actual plates that was used to print the story. .
They look great when you put them into a nice frame. .

Paddy Henry

The postman just delivered the book. Having just flicked through it quickly, I have to say that I am impressed. It's a very professional lay out. Brilliant George.
I am now going to lock myself away in my office so I wont be disturbed and have a proper read of it.

Andy Goodman

Postman just been and what can I say "absolutely fantastic George".
Well done shipmate
- Wolfy

Another "absolutely fantastic" and thanks for the message.
Will have a proper look/read tonight.

Peter Weatherby

Mine has arrived!! Fantastic job George, a quick gander and my first impression is that it is a quality bit of gear with just two exceptions, the first and last photos! I haven't got time to write more 'cause I have to read me book! Well done George and congratulations to you and 'er indoors.

Darby Allen

Hi George,
Got mine this morning and a brilliant job you did of it too. Reading through the personal stories the lads sent in, and your own written contributions brought a lump to the throat.
The pics are amazing. A permanent record of the "good old day's " if ever there was one.
Why not do a lecture tour using it as your backdrop?. The human side of recycling.

Mike Quinn

Opened the envelope and read the book, brilliant, well done to you both and thanks.
Wilky

Got mine tonight when I came home from work. Scan read it first, was shocked you could do such a thing as put my photo in looking so young and skin. Will sit down and read it cover to cover later but highly impressed. Both daughters want a copy for 'a keepsake of their Dad' they have said for when I pass away. F***ing charming!!! So another order is on its way to you shortly. I have a suspicion the daughter whose a probation officer wants it to use as a threat to those who break their probation orders and the other well.........she works in Accessing Psychological Therapies so the mind boggles.
A huge BZ George and Lou. Cracking job grommit!

Mike Race

Great book George, thanks to you both for the effort put in to this project.
The pictures, new and old, tell a great story of a fine ship and ships company.
Memories are great but to have them wrapped up in this book is something special.
Well done mate.

A bang at the front door yesterday herald the arrival of a package addressed to me.
It was a ships mirror from Leavesley. Great I thought!
But as I unwrapped it there was the dreaded rattle of smashed glass within. Still half wrapped I lay it on the carpet and sat staring at it, not a little gutted.
Reckon I remained like that for half an hour or so, when there came a thud at the door.
The book had arrived! And WHAT a book!!
Its an absolute fantastic and professional job, George and Lou. You have provided Intrepids crew with a lasting and permanent record that with every turn of a page opens floodgates of both memories and emotions. Its real something special that I'll treasure always. Thank you both.
(oh, and that mirror remained where it lay and forgotten for quite some time)!!

Terry Gilchrist

Thank you George, wonderful book, it moved me and will be cherished.

I arrived home tonight, the normal routine
Train from Victoria, about 5.15
Walked through the door to a hug and a kiss
From the woman I love and who I have missed
But from there on in the routine was gone
As I saw a package, I wondered who from?
As I opened it up, it revealed a large book
So I sat in the chair, deciding to look
The time drifted bye, no thought of my meal
As I read of the lives of friends all so real
Of the deeds they had done and the places they had been
Of the horrors of war no one should have seen
I laughed at the stories, recalled from past times
And smiled to myself as memories came to mind
I looked at the photos of mess decks and bridge
The things we held dear, even a fridge
Sods opera’s and nights out, a beer with a mate
Exercises and fire drills and duties I hate
As I turned each page and watched the demise
Of the ship that I loved and some times despised
A feeling came over me, one hard to explain
But as I watched it demolished it came once again
The feeling was sadness like at the loss of a friend
A feeling so strong it was hard to comprehend
The last page of the book reading the sailors prayer
A tear left my eye and rolled on to the chair
I closed up the book, my mind far away
Recalling friendships and memories from my yesterday

Hi George
Thanks for a fantastic book, its a great tribute to the grand
old lady, i would also like to thank you as you have used 3 of my pictures
in the book in the Men & Memories section, the BMARC A03-2 Twin 30mm Cannon
looking like fireworks (the book says phalanx but i don't think anyone will
notice), the seacat that is already a distance from its launcher and the
picture of a bunch of drunken sailors on the tank deck holding there cans
of beer (I am the 3rd from the left with the Carlsberg to my ear), and to
also be in another picture i believe came from Johno where the are 3 of us
in 4F2 at Christmas from left to right, Goldie, myself with a Ronald Reagan
in my pocket and John Underhay, its fantastic memories that i will never
forget and i can now share these with my son who is now 20 and is
considering going into the forces. i can not thank you enough.  (PS the man
in the union jack shorts with his hand down the girls top is Hilton or
Hilly as he was known. best regards Alex McAuliffe

Book arrived today, can't believe it, only posted cheque on Thursday, well done to the post office and George/Louise.
Have had a quick flick through and it looks absolutely wonderful, going away for a weeks holiday plan to read it while chilling out.
Once again many thanks.

Buck Taylor (Mark)

Mine dropped through the letterbox on Saturday morning... didn't put it down all weekend. My wife's eyes started glazing over by Saturday night; especially when I got the photo's out of the loft of me in tropical uniform etc etc!!
Brought a bit of a tear to the eye at one point when I could see my old pit in 3H1 mess through the open side of the old lady in one of the photo's; I was the last to sleep in it as we put her into mothballs for the final time in '91. Lots of happy memories came flooding back and, thinking about it, all of the rubbish bits still made us all laugh in a twisted kind of way.
Good effort George.

Dickie Davies

A real piece of history, thank you

Aaron Bougaard

Extremely pleased with this item, especially as i am in it twice! Alex McAuliffe

Fab book. Should have been put into a museum piece. Barry Whitfield.
